About flying premium to Europe

Europe is the most-flown premium-cabin corridor from the United States, and the one where the math is simplest. Eastbound flights leave in the evening and land the next morning: about six and a half hours to Dublin, seven to London and Lisbon, eight to Frankfurt and Zurich, closer to ten to Athens and Istanbul. In a lie-flat seat that is a night's sleep and a full first day. In economy it is a lost day spent recovering. Westbound, the daytime return gives you a long lunch, a film and a quiet arrival in time for dinner at home.

Airlines and cabins. Every European flag carrier competes for this traffic, which is why premium fares to Europe are more negotiable than almost anywhere else on the map. British Airways (Club Suite), Air France, Lufthansa (Allegris), SWISS, Iberia, KLM, Aer Lingus, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, ITA Airways, TAP Air Portugal, SAS and Austrian all fly lie-flat business class from the US, alongside Delta One, United Polaris and American Flagship Business. The newest seats — Club Suite, Air France's sliding-door business, Lufthansa Allegris, Delta One Suites and American's Flagship Suite — have privacy doors; older cabins on the same routes can still be open-plan, which is one of the things we check before we quote.

First Class. True First Class to Europe exists on fewer routes than people expect: British Airways First to London, Air France La Première to Paris, Lufthansa First to Frankfurt and Munich, SWISS First to Zurich, and Emirates First on its New York–Milan and Newark–Athens flights. If First matters to you, say so — we will route you onto an aircraft that actually has it.

When to fly, when to book. Peak pricing runs from mid-June through August and again over Christmas and New Year. The shoulder months — April–May and September–October — combine the best weather across most of the continent with fares that are noticeably lower. November through March is cheapest of all and a fine time for London, Paris, Vienna, Zurich and Munich, but several leisure nonstops (Venice, Nice, Prague, and Athens from some cities) run roughly May–October only, so a winter trip to those cities may mean a one-stop via a hub. For summer travel, ask for fares three to four months out; last-minute premium fares to Europe are rarely bargains.

Gateways. New York (JFK and Newark) has nonstop premium service to every city on this page. Boston, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco each serve the major capitals nonstop, and Miami is particularly strong for Spain, Portugal and Italy. From the West Coast, expect ten to twelve hours nonstop to London, Paris, Frankfurt or Zurich — long enough that the flat bed is not a luxury but the point.

Beyond the gateway city. London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbon, Zurich and Istanbul are hubs. Fly premium into any of them and continue to Florence, Porto, Santorini, Dubrovnik, Split or the Alps on the same ticket. Open-jaw itineraries (into Rome, home from Paris) usually price close to a simple round trip — see our multi-city page.

Which airlines have the best business class to Europe?

The cabins with privacy doors are the ones travelers rate highest: British Airways Club Suite, Air France's newest business seat, Lufthansa Allegris, Delta One Suites, United Polaris and American's Flagship Suite. Turkish Airlines, Iberia, SWISS and Aer Lingus are consistently well reviewed for food and service. On any given route we can tell you which flights carry the newer seat.

Is there First Class to Europe from the US?

Yes, on a limited set of routes: British Airways to London, Air France La Première to Paris, Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, SWISS to Zurich, and Emirates on New York–Milan and Newark–Athens. Every other transatlantic route tops out at business class.

When is the cheapest time to fly business class to Europe?

Mid-January through March, and November outside Thanksgiving week. April–May and September–October are the value sweet spot if you also want good weather. Booking three to four months ahead for summer travel matters more than any single day of the week.
