Amsterdam has more US nonstops than any European city outside London and Paris, thanks to the KLM–Delta partnership, and Schiphol is the easiest airport on the continent to arrive at: one terminal, a train station under the concourse, and Centraal Station 15 minutes away. Seven and a half hours overnight from New York, and you are on the canals by breakfast.

Flying Business Class to Amsterdam

KLM and Delta fly Amsterdam as a joint venture from New York, Boston, Washington, Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco — the widest US coverage of any continental European city. KLM's World Business Class on the 787 and 777 is a lie-flat 1-2-1 cabin with a Dutch-designed lounge at Schiphol; Delta One Suites fly on the A330-900 and A350, and older Delta 767s carry the open Delta One seat. United adds Polaris from Newark, Chicago, Washington and Houston, and JetBlue flies Mint from New York and Boston. No carrier operates a First Class cabin on the route; KLM retired First decades ago.

Schiphol's layout is the reason to route through Amsterdam even when it is not the destination. Every gate is in one building, minimum connections are short, and KLM's European network reaches Copenhagen, Berlin, Edinburgh and dozens of smaller cities in 60–90 minutes — a one-stop on KLM to a secondary city is often quicker than a nonstop plus a train. Thalys and ICE trains leave from the station under the terminal for Brussels (under two hours), Paris (three and a quarter) and Cologne.

The Netherlands' peak is spring: tulip season at Keukenhof from late March to mid-May, and King's Day on April 27 when the whole city turns orange. Summer is busy and pleasant, September is quiet and mild, and December brings the light festival on the canals. Fares are highest in April and July–August; January–February and November sit closest to our $2,200 New York starting price, which is one of the lowest lie-flat fares to the continent.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”

“It was great! So helpful and patient the only negative thing I can say is it wasn’t communicated the price for assistance until I already paid and left a tip.”
