About flying premium to South America
South America is the continent that rewards a lie-flat seat without punishing you afterward. Most of it sits within one or two hours of US Eastern time, so the long overnight flights south — eight hours from Miami to São Paulo, nine to Buenos Aires, eight and a half to Santiago — land you at breakfast with your body clock intact. Fly down flat, wake up in a different hemisphere with the whole trip ahead of you. The shorter hops — Miami to Bogotá in three and a half hours, Cartagena in two and a half, Lima in five and a half — are usually daytime flights on narrowbody aircraft, where the front cabin is a recliner First Class seat rather than a bed.
Airlines and cabins. American runs the largest Latin American network from Miami, with lie-flat Flagship Business on the São Paulo, Rio, Buenos Aires, Santiago and Lima widebodies. LATAM flies 787s and 777s with flat beds from Miami, New York, Boston, Orlando and Los Angeles. Delta serves São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Lima and Bogotá from Atlanta and New York, and United from Houston and Newark. Avianca and Copa cover Colombia and connect the region, mostly with recliner business cabins. For an unusual routing — Buenos Aires via Madrid on Iberia, or Rio on Air France or British Airways through Europe — we can price the one-stop when it beats the nonstop.
When to go. Seasons are reversed. Southern summer (December–February) is the peak for Rio, Buenos Aires and Patagonia and the most expensive time to fly; Carnival (February or early March) sells out premium cabins in Brazil months ahead. Argentina's wine harvest is March–April, and Chilean and Argentine skiing runs July–September. Colombia and Peru are pleasant year-round, with Machu Picchu best in the dry months of May–September. The cheapest windows are May–June and September–November.
Gateways. Miami is the natural door, with nonstops to every city on this page. New York and Newark reach São Paulo, Rio, Buenos Aires, Lima and Bogotá nonstop; Atlanta and Houston serve the major capitals; Los Angeles has LATAM nonstops to Lima and São Paulo. From the rest of the country, a same-day connection through Miami or Houston is usually the fastest route.
South America flight questions
How much is business class to Brazil or Argentina from the US?
Our negotiated starting fares are about $2,000 round trip to Rio, $2,100 to São Paulo and Buenos Aires, $2,200 to Santiago and $1,900 to Lima from Miami for lead-time bookings. Bogotá starts near $1,600 and Cartagena and Medellín around $1,500. Carnival, Christmas and southern-summer dates price higher.
Is business class to South America lie-flat?
On the long overnight routes — São Paulo, Rio, Buenos Aires, Santiago and most Lima flights — yes, on American, LATAM, Delta and United widebodies. On the short daytime hops to Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín, the front cabin is typically a recliner First Class seat on a narrowbody. We tell you which before you book.
Is there jet lag flying to South America?
Very little. Bogotá and Lima are on Eastern time or one hour behind; São Paulo, Rio and Buenos Aires are one to two hours ahead; Santiago one hour ahead. The overnight flight is the only adjustment, and a flat bed handles it.
When is the cheapest time to fly business class to South America?
May–June and September–November, outside local holidays. Avoid Carnival week, Christmas–New Year and the southern-summer peak of January–February if price is the priority.
