Flying Business Class to Santiago
LATAM, with Santiago as its home hub, flies nonstop from Miami, New York JFK and Los Angeles, with lie-flat business on its 787s and 777s — the newest 787-9s carry a suite with a door. American flies from Miami and Dallas with Flagship Business; Delta, LATAM's joint-venture partner, from Atlanta with Delta One; United from Houston with Polaris. Every nonstop is a widebody with a flat bed. From Europe, Iberia, Air France, British Airways, KLM and Lufthansa fly Santiago; from the Pacific, Qantas flies Sydney–Santiago, which makes a round-the-world routing possible. No US–Santiago flight has a First Class cabin.
The flights are overnight in both directions — depart 9 to 11pm, land 7 to 10am — and the new Terminal 2, opened in 2022, is a huge improvement, with LATAM's flagship lounge airside. The drive to Las Condes and Vitacura takes 30 to 45 minutes. Santiago is the base for the whole country: the Maipo and Casablanca wine valleys are an hour, Valparaíso 90 minutes, Valle Nevado and Portillo for skiing 90 minutes to two hours, and LATAM and Sky fly to Calama for the Atacama (two hours), Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine (three and a half), and Easter Island (five and a half) — all on the same ticket where the fare allows.
Chile's summer, October through April, is the season for the city, the wine valleys and Patagonia, with the harvest in March–April and Christmas–New Year and February the peaks for fares and Patagonian lodges. June through September is ski season, an hour and a half from the airport, and the shoulder for everything else — the cheapest time to fly, with business fares from Miami at or below our $2,200 starting price. The Atacama is dry year-round. An open-jaw into Santiago and home from Buenos Aires — or the reverse, with a Patagonia crossing between — prices close to a round trip.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
