Business & First Class Flights to Sydney
from$4,800round trip · per person
Sydney is the flight that settles the business-class argument: fifteen hours from Los Angeles, seventeen from Dallas, overnight across the date line, and you land at six in the morning two calendar days after you left. In a flat bed that is a night's sleep and a harbor-side breakfast; in economy it is a day you never get back. Qantas flies the only First Class on the Pacific here, on the A380 from Los Angeles.

Flying Business & First Class to Sydney
Qantas flies Sydney nonstop from Los Angeles on the A380 — the only First Class cabin across the Pacific, fourteen suites on the lower deck — and the 787-9, from San Francisco and Dallas on the 787-9, and from New York JFK via Auckland on the 787-9; its Business Suite is lie-flat on every aircraft, with a mattress topper and Neil Perry menus. United flies Polaris from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston; Delta flies Delta One Suites on the A350 from Los Angeles; American, Qantas's joint-venture partner, flies Flagship Business on the 787-9 from Los Angeles and Dallas. Fiji Airways via Nadi (eleven hours, then four) and Air New Zealand via Auckland break the journey with a stopover; Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific reach Sydney the long way round, in First or Qsuite, for clients combining Asia or the Gulf.
The westbound flights leave Los Angeles between 9 and 11pm and land in Sydney between 6 and 8am two calendar days later; the crews serve dinner, dim the cabin for eight hours, and serve breakfast on descent, which is why Qantas lets you sleep from take-off. The eastbound return leaves Sydney in the morning or early afternoon and lands in Los Angeles the same calendar morning — you arrive before you left. Sydney's Terminal 1 has the Qantas First and Business lounges and the Air New Zealand and American partner lounges; the train reaches Circular Quay in 15 minutes. Melbourne is an hour's flight, Cairns and the Reef three, Uluru three and a half, Queenstown three.
Australia's summer, December through February, is the peak — Christmas week and New Year's Eve, with the harbor fireworks, are the most expensive dates of the year, and premium cabins sell out by August. September–November and March–May are the sweet spot: mild, uncrowded, the best fares outside winter. June through August is Sydney's winter — 60s by day, quiet, and the cheapest time to fly, with business fares from Los Angeles closest to our $4,800 starting price. Vivid Sydney, the light festival in late May and June, is the one winter draw that lifts fares.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
