Flying Business Class to Auckland
Air New Zealand flies Auckland nonstop from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago and New York JFK, with its lie-flat Business Premier on the 787-9 and 777-300ER and the new Business Premier suites with doors — and the larger Business Premier Luxe — on retrofitted and new 787s. United, its joint-venture partner, flies Polaris from San Francisco and Los Angeles; Delta flies Delta One from Los Angeles; American flies Flagship Business from Los Angeles and Dallas in season; and Qantas flies New York JFK–Auckland as the first leg of its Sydney service. No US–Auckland flight has a First Class cabin. Fiji Airways via Nadi (eleven hours, then three) breaks the journey with an island stop, and Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Qatar Airways fly Auckland the long way round.
The westbound flights are overnight across the date line — leave Los Angeles in the evening, land in Auckland early in the morning two calendar days later; the New York flight leaves late evening and lands in the morning, too. Auckland's international terminal has the Air New Zealand Lounge, one of the best in the region, and the domestic terminal — a five-minute covered walk — connects to Queenstown (1h50), Christchurch (1h20), Wellington (an hour) and Rotorua (45 minutes) on Air New Zealand, which we book on the same ticket so bags check through. Most clients spend a night or two in Auckland or go straight on to the South Island.
New Zealand's summer, December through February, is the peak, with Christmas through late January the most expensive window; book by August. March–April and October–November are the shoulders — mild, quieter, better fares. June through September is winter and the ski season in Queenstown and Wanaka, and the cheapest time to fly to Auckland itself, with business fares from Los Angeles closest to our $4,500 starting price. Fares from New York and Chicago run higher year-round.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
