Business Class Flights to Cartagena
from$1,500round trip · per person
Cartagena is the Caribbean's best-preserved colonial city — the walled Old Town, Getsemaní, the Rosario Islands an hour by boat — and it is two and a half hours from Miami, closer than Cancún is to New York. The airport is ten minutes from the walls. A front-cabin seat gets you through it first, and our $1,500 starting fare is the lowest in South America.
Arrival airport
Rafael Núñez International (CTG), 10–15 minutes from the walled city and Bocagrande
Flight time
~2.5h from Miami or Fort Lauderdale · ~4h from Atlanta · ~5h from New York or Newark
Time difference
same as Eastern Standard Time (1 hour behind Eastern in summer — Colombia does not change clocks)
Best time to go
December–April (dry, breezy); the Hay Festival (late January) and New Year's Eve are peaks; September–November is the rainy season and cheapest; it is hot year-round

Flying Business Class to Cartagena
American flies Cartagena nonstop from Miami several times a day with narrowbody recliner First Class; Delta flies from Atlanta and, in season, New York; Avianca flies from Miami and Fort Lauderdale with recliner business; JetBlue flies from New York and Fort Lauderdale and Spirit from Fort Lauderdale without a premium cabin; United has operated seasonal Newark service. Copa connects via Panama City. No lie-flat seat operates from the US, and on a two-and-a-half-hour flight none is needed; the front cabin is priority handling, a lounge at the US gateway, bags and a quiet cabin on a full holiday flight. From cities without a nonstop, a connection through Bogotá (an hour on) on Avianca, or through Miami, is the routing.
Rafael Núñez is remarkably close to everything — the walled city and Getsemaní are ten to fifteen minutes, Bocagrande the same — and hotels arrange transfers, which in Cartagena means a car to the edge of the pedestrian Old Town. The Rosario Islands, with their beach clubs and small hotels, are 45 to 60 minutes by boat from the marina; Barú's Playa Blanca is an hour by road. Santa Marta and Tayrona are four hours by road or a short flight via Bogotá.
December through April is the dry season and the peak: New Year's Eve fills the Old Town, the Hay Festival in late January brings a literary crowd, and Colombian and international travelers fill the front cabins on the Miami flights. May through August is hot and mostly dry. September through November is the rainy season — short, heavy afternoon storms — and the cheapest time to fly, well below our $1,500 starting fare from Miami.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
