Flying Business Class to Vienna
Austrian Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, flies Vienna nonstop from New York JFK, Newark, Chicago and Washington year-round, with seasonal summer service from Boston and Los Angeles in some years. Its 777s and 787s carry a lie-flat business cabin, and the food — designed and loaded by Do & Co, with a chef on board on many long-haul flights — is a recurring reason clients choose it. United flies Polaris from Newark and Washington. That is the full nonstop list, which is why the one-stop alternatives matter here more than in most cities: Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, SWISS via Zurich and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul all reach Vienna in under two hours from their hubs and frequently price below the nonstops from cities Austrian does not serve. No US–Vienna flight carries a First Class cabin.
Vienna's airport is 20 minutes from the center on the City Airport Train, and the city is a rail hub: Budapest is two and a half hours, Bratislava under an hour, Salzburg two and a half, Prague four. Austrian's short-haul network covers all of central and eastern Europe — Kraków, Dubrovnik, Split, Sofia — in 60–90 minutes, so a premium ticket to Vienna is often the best way into the Balkans and the Adriatic in the same cabin.
The city has two winter peaks: the Christmas markets from mid-November through December, and the ball season in January and February (the Opera Ball is in February). Both push business fares above our $2,400 New York starting price. May–June and September–October are mild and quieter. March–April and late October–early November are cheapest. Summer is pleasant but many concert halls are closed; if the Vienna Philharmonic or the State Opera is the reason for the trip, travel between September and June.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
