Flying Business Class to Lisbon
TAP Air Portugal has built Lisbon into a transatlantic hub, with lie-flat business seats on its A330-900neos and A321LRs from Newark, New York JFK, Boston, Washington, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco. United flies Polaris from Newark and Washington; Delta from New York, Boston and Atlanta; American from Philadelphia and, in season, New York and Boston; and Azores Airlines connects Boston and New York via Ponta Delgada. Four carriers on a short route is why the starting fare here is $1,900 — the lowest lie-flat crossing to mainland Europe we sell. No US–Lisbon nonstop carries a First Class cabin.
TAP's stopover program is worth knowing: fly TAP to anywhere in its European or African network and stop in Lisbon or Porto for up to ten nights at no extra fare. The airport is close to the city — the metro takes 25 minutes, a taxi 15 — and TAP's domestic and Iberian network reaches Porto in 55 minutes, Faro in 45, Madeira in 90 and Madrid in 75. High-speed rail to Porto takes under three hours.
Portugal's weather makes the shoulder seasons long. March through June and September through October are ideal, with the Algarve swimmable from May. The Santo António festival on June 12–13 fills Lisbon, and July–August is peak for the coast. Winters are mild, sunny and the cheapest time to fly; a business seat from Newark in January or February sits right on our starting fare. Fly into Lisbon and home from Porto or Faro on an open-jaw and you save a day of backtracking.

“Steven was enthusiastic (to a fault). His first of three offers was about 10% above my budget but the flights really fit the schedule so well I had to say yes. The other two offers were cheaper but the timing was off for me.”
